25th of February 2018, Slovakia
27 years old journalist Ján Kuciak and his
fiancée Martina Kušnírová
were found dead in their own house.
The last article that the promising
young investigative journalist worked
on for Aktuality.sk was about tax frauds,
and it exposed mafia connections to the
highest Slovak government
representatives. This incident initiated
the largest mass demonstrations
and protests since 1989 not only
in the capital city Bratislava,
but in the whole country as well. SHUT UP! The voice of democracy is in danger not only in Slovakia, but all over the world. We appealed to designers world-wide to join our initiative commemorating and drawing attention to what happened in Slovakia, and create a poster for our project SHUT UP! The Voice of Democracy in Danger. When the voice of someone who should speak up is silenced, the “voice” of these designs speak the loudest.
We received 384 designs from 36 countries (for example China, Poland, Cyprus, Jordan, Italy, South Korea, USA, Canada, Russia, Japan, Ukraine, Iran, Ecuador, Mexico, Portugal, Switzerland, etc.) and chose the best 100 to represent the project globally.
